DIY Toy Storage

Hello friends!  I hope you had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend.  We relaxed some and, of course, DIYed some.  One of my projects over the long weekend was to create some DIY toy storage for our girls’ playroom.  You can read all about the storage issues we have been trying to solve in the playroom here.  Well, this DIY toy storage project cost us very little and I love that we were able to upcyle in the process!

I knew I wanted a VIBRANT color palette for this storage.  Lucky for me Ace Hardware recently released their new OPI paint colors by Clark+Kensington.  If you haven’t already checked out the OPI collections, you are in for a treat.  I have already fallen in love with many of the OPI colors, which you can read about here  and here.  But I needed something more colorful and lively for this project and the brand new The Natural collection is just what I was looking for!

For this project, I chose Cajun Shrimp and Need Sunglasses? in Clark+Kensington Satin finish.  I paired those with one of the coordinating colors suggested by Clark+Kensington, Work of Art.  They look beautiful together.  {From top to bottom: Work of Art, Cajun Shrimp, Need Sunglasses?}

Now, read on to see exactly how I transformed old coffee cans into functional, fun and pretty toy storage for our girls!

1) Remove the labels from your coffee cans.

2) Prime your coffee cans with latex based primer.  I enlisted the help of my two favorite assistants for this part, since the primer can be messily applied and still do its job 🙂

3) After the primer has dried, apply your paint in whatever pattern you choose.  I opted for horizontal stripes on one and a two-tone zig-zag pattern on the other.  The Cajun Shrimp and Work of Art required 2 coats.  The Need Sunglasses? required 3 coats.  Still, a sample can of each color was WAY more than enough for this job!

4) After the paint dried, I applied simple chalkboard labels to the cans.  It adds a cute touch and reminds our girls to be mindful about where they place their toys, even though they can’t read “Bean Bags” yet.  They can read “Balls,” which they are excited about!  Then you are done–how easy was that?!

That’s absolutely it!  Aren’t these fun and functional?  I am so glad I hung onto those old coffee cans!  Just imagine the zillion ways you could decorate old coffee cans to transform them into useful and stylish storage.  Start saving them now!

Now, to help you with a paint project of your choosing, together with our friends at Ace Hardware, we’ll be giving away a $100 Ace Hardware gift card to one lucky reader!  Using the Rafflecopter widget below, enter as many ways as you’d like.
